Why do we need water?

Water has a range of positive effects on the function of our body including assisting to:

  • Maintain the health and integrity of every cell in the body
  • Maintain an ideal consistency of blood to reduce pressure and allow proper circulation
  • Help eliminate the by-products of the body's metabolism
  • Regulate body temperature through perspiration
  • Moisten mucous membranes in the respiratory system to improve breathing and immune function
  • Lubricate and cushion joints
  • Aid digestion and prevent constipation
  • Moisturise the skin and maintain its texture and appearance

How much water do I need?

To put it simply:

35mL per kilogram per day

Or

1L per 25 kilograms of body weight

Will this amount change?

Yes as our lives are constantly changing so are our needs. Factors that can affect our water demands are:

  • Water loss occurs with perspiration and therefore will increase with exercise or warm weather. Add an extra 750mL per hour of exercise!
  • Water assists in digestion and utilisation will alter as our food intake does. Add a further 500mL per caffeinated or alcoholic drink or if your diet consists of processed sugars.
  • More water is required when suffering from any physical, chemical or emotional stress. Increase your uptake to 43mL per kilogram of body weight per day to promote better recovery!
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding requires 750-1000mL of extra water above our daily intake to compensate for the increased loss.

How do I meet these needs?

The body utilises water best with small but frequent intake. Plus it is a lot less daunting then trying to drink our daily needs in one go! Keep a bottle of water with you throughout the day and you will be surprised with how much water you will go through!
